It was a commercial success, selling over two million copies. However, some criticized its difficulty and multiplayer mode. Sonic Colors received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its graphics, audio, soundtrack, gameplay and replay value, with many considering it a return to form for the series. In anticipation of the game's release, Sega delisted several Sonic games with sub-average Metacritic scores to increase the value of the brand. The game was designed for a wider demographic than previous games, specifically children and fans of the Super Mario series. Two versions of the game were developed: one for the Wii by Sonic Team, and one for the Nintendo DS by Dimps. Examining criticisms of past games, the developers made Sonic the only playable character and worked to balance speed and platforming the Wisps were introduced to diversify the gameplay without slowing it down. The game also introduces Wisps, power-ups the player can use to increase attack power and reach new areas.ĭevelopment of Sonic Colors began in 2008, following the completion of Sonic Unleashed. The gameplay is similar to prior Sonic games, with players collecting rings and defeating enemies the camera perspective often switches from third-person to side-scrolling perspectives. It follows Sonic's quest to stop his nemesis Doctor Eggman from enslaving an alien race and taking over the world. However, Sega did shoot themselves in the foot by limiting items to one character rather than allow any character any type of kart part-a missed opportunity considering the wide range of kart designs among the character roster.Sonic Colors (known as Sonic Colours in the PAL region) is a 2010 platform game published by Sega. The different wheels, car colors and styles, and various other parts did make my kart feel unique. ![]() These unlocks, including different wheels, bumpers, and other items for each car were one of the positive elements of the entire game. The in-game currency (credits and not rings for some reason) you use to buy car parts, bonus blocks, and cosmetics didn't give me enough incentive to keep playing either. While online and local multiplayer modes gave me more challenging opponents, the issues with the driving mechanics, level design, and everything else makes it hard to invest myself into each race. Nothing felt meaningful once I finished the story mode either. I often didn't want to play through the grand prix at the end of each chapter. The standard races with the same teams, especially since you can't mix and match members of each squad, got stale fairly quickly. The variety in mission types was nice, but the inability to play them right away ruined a lot of my enjoyment. Outside time trials, local play, and online multiplayer, there isn't much else you can play through when you first start out. If you're looking to handle the majority of this one alone then the campaign will be your only option. Team Sonic Racing's campaign includes seven chapters of races, as well as other types of modes like ring collection, target smashes, and elimination rounds, tied together by horribly boring cutscenes made up of static character art. ![]()
